JOB REQUIREMENTS AND TRAINING

In order to become a firefighter with the City of Flowood, you must first be at least eighteen years of age and you must have a High School Diploma or equivalency in order to apply. The task of firefighting is extremely physical and very demanding so being in good physical shape is essential.

The application process is followed by a four step testing process:

  1. Background Check
  2. Written Exam
  3. Physical Fitness Exam
  4. Interview

Our firefighters are required to attend many different schools and academies during their career. The first stop will be at the Mississippi State Fire Academy for seven weeks of basic training. The next school will be Emergency Medical Technician school which is the equivalent of one full college semester. After these basic schools then it’s on to Driver / Operator school, Rope Rescue Technician, Hazardous Materials training and the list goes on.
